Color of the bikeshed
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The “color of the bikeshed” is a proverbial phrase referring to the apparent ease with which one can get approval for building a large and complex project (such as a billion-dollar laboratory) compared to the difficulty of reaching consensus to build something conceptually simple — because everyone involved wants to add their own opinion. This is considered a form of red tape when it occurs physically.
Explanation
A major laboratory is so vastly expensive and complicated that people cannot understand it, so they assume that those working on it understand it. On the other hand, everyone understands a bikeshed, so building one results in endless discussions. Everyone involved wants to add his touch and show that he is there.
The adage, “Why should I care what color the bikeshed is?”, means: just because you are capable of building a bikeshed does not mean you should stop others from building one just because you do not like the color they plan to paint it.
The phrase has often been quoted in collaborative settings such as wikis and open source software projects, where “the bikeshed problem” is apparent. People stay quiet on technical issues, but when an issue like indentation formatting or naming conventions arises, everyone has an opinion.
History
This expression of the idea was explained by C. Northcote Parkinson in his management book, Parkinson’s Law (1957), and popularized by a 1999 email post by Poul-Henning Kamp to the FreeBSD development mailing list. Ironically in the arguments which Parkinson illustrated, e.g., whether the roof should be made of asbestos or galvanised iron, one aspect not mentioned was the color!
The original explanation used a nuclear power plant as the expensive-but-easy-to-approve project, but in the United States such an item is in fact not easy to approve, so this example may confuse the point, which is that once there is agreement in principle to do a large and complicated thing, it is easy to approve a specific plan for it.
status report
Hey guys. Damn its so hard to keep ones blog up to date when one is so busy! I’ve started doing Yoga again and boy does it hurt – my thighs were / still are aching. But its good, I really want to get fit again and do more tramping this summer.
I just saw An Inconvenient Truth – damn you Americans for not following the Kyoto Protocol, when New York is covered in Water I’ll be here laughing at you voters that got it wrong!!! I fully believe all individuals can help change the global warming problem but it feels or perhaps seems moot without America coming to the Kyoto party! However. I wont let that stop me doing my bit to help – this weekend I’ll plant a tree at the family farm and buy some energy efficient light bulbs (come to think about it why haven’t governments banned non efficient ones yet – are the profits / rights of a few light bulb companies worth out planet???)
Otherwise I don’t have much to report that I can write quickly about. But its all good… I’m happy, life is pretty good.
Mo-vember madness
Hey you peeps. In the spirit of Mo-Vember I’m growing a mo with handles. Huh? Okay the following is shamelessy ripped out of an email from a friend. I couldnt have written it better so peace out… Andre… I’m so proud of you ;)
The basic point of Mo-vember is to draw attention to the much ignored issue of men’s health. There are a range of men’s health issues which need to have their profile raised a little – prostate cancer; testicular cancer; and male depression. The Mo-vember website (link below) lays down a little info about these topics with the aim of trying to get men better informed and able to spot issues before it all goes too far.
http://www.movember.com/nz/malehealth/?action=view&id=77 (link to the men’s health part of the website)
A key part of Mo-vember is raising sponsorship money which is then put towards one of the target areas – this year all funds are being donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ. If you are interested in sponsoring a team of local mo-growers – then please check out the following link: http://www.movember.com/nz/sponsor/ (either search for the team “Commo” or use thier registration number 6172)
The Commerce Commission team has rustled up $645 in total sponsorship dollars to go towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation so far. Contributions of any amount are welcome – as are mo’s grown in support.
If you don’t do anything else – then just check out the website and have a laugh at some of the classic mo’s viewable in the pool room section of the site.
Should you be a Mo-Sista – you can still help spread the good word – and if your significant male other is having trouble talking about things – try a little role play – everyone feels comfy talking to a nurse!

jiggy web 2.0 redesign and launch
We’ve relaunched the Jiggy website. Now that it has a new interface we hope that it’ll get some more traction. I hope that it is a success for our client not only because it is good for New Zealand artists but (now back to wearing my geek hat) because it is also a great example of web 2.0 mixed with some really great functionality! The main features as I see them are:
- Its full of Ajax making the user experience a nice one
- The design and use of web 2.0 gradients is nice on the eye
- There isnt an easier way to buy an MP3… then sending an SMS
- The flash MP3 previews are pretty cool and make it harder to steal sound files
So what are your thoughts? Tell me its better then Coke Tunes. And of course don’t forget… the music will even play on your iPod!!!

viva la france kick ass
I’m so glad that France Won today against Portugal. Its not that I really like the French or that I really dislike the Portuguese – its more to do with the fact that at any given micro second I’m capable of changing my mind, without any warning or apparent reason why. Its because I’m a human being capable of millions of background processes constantly sifting through data, re-evaluating data and ideas and opinions. When new data comes in it is added to the jobs pending (sometimes things happen immediately if I give certain tasks greater priority) and then things change – And right now I’m rooting for the French!
Admittedly I wasn’t to impressed when the French blew up the Rainbow Warrior but since they have managed to wipe the smirk of that little grease bag Ronaldo’s face, all is forgiven. Heck it was only a ship after all and in the face of new information – i hope you are all as open minded and as capable of processing new information as I am – Nuclear power probably isnt such a bad idea after all!!! ;)
drop down menu’s
This was written in a rush! Please ignore any obvious gramatical or speeeeling mistakes. For the sake of authenticity I will not edit this post!!!!! (also i’m way to busy man!!!)
I’ve searched far and wide for the best and easiest to use drop down menu solution.
I did not base my search on what may “look” the best but I have based my search on what is the most usable, what is the easiest to maintain and use solution, and whether it is web standards compliant. Of course what does this mean to you… you can save money and force your paid developers to upskill!!!
First Option – Drop-Down Menus, Horizontal Style
If you are commissioning a job then you and your developers should always check out A List Apart first to see if somebody has already done what you want. This is where I found this article. Let me just say. There is a reason that these guys have clients like blogger.com, google, and yahoo. Its because webstandards and quality matter, these guys walk the walk that you like to talk, they are 100% committed to the humans that use websites. And I think that is cool!
This drop down menu is rather snazzy. I like it, the conversation in the user comments is a good read, and their are instrunctions on how to integrate it into your site.

Second Option – Son of the sucker fish
These guys have also made an awesome menu. The second paragraph impressed me “Well now they’re back and they’re more accessible, even lighter in weight (just 12 lines of JavaScript), have greater compatibility (they now work in Opera and Safari without a hack in sight) and can have multiple-levels.”
Ask your programmer to look at the suckerfish dropdown solution for you.

dr xu
Dr XU is a mirricle man. Not quite like the funny little American Indian Spiritual doctors that eat you, consume your ailment, then vomit you back up. Nope, John is a trained professional with over 8 years of medical training under his belt, you can read more about Jon and his clinic by browsing to their website. All I want to do is make it easy for you to find them.
A few years ago after a Judo incident I had some very painful cartiliage damage behind the knee cap, my western doctor told me there was nothing I can do and that I would have to live with it. Unsatisfied with that answer I asked around and started looking for alternative solutions and I found Dr Xu. Dr Xu identified the problem and within two weeks of very regular accupuncture my knee that had been hurting for at least a month was fully recovered.
This is no tell tale it actualy worked and for you sceptics out there, if you have an issue with accupuncture check out this wikipedia actricle on the science behind accupuncture. I WANT TO BELIEVE.
